Nobody knows Skalica better. GM Jerguš Pecháč — the youngest grandmaster in Slovak history and two-time winner of the Skalica festival — will be the only home player in the closed Chess Slovak Masters 2026. Against elite opposition from four continents, he will fly the Slovak flag at a tournament unlike anything Slovakia has ever hosted.
The youngest grandmaster in Slovak history
Pecháč (born 2001) became a grandmaster in 2019 at eighteen — the youngest in the history of Slovak chess. In January 2023 his rating climbed to a career-high 2637, good for No. 115 in the world rankings. On the August FIDE list he holds an ELO of 2536 — but Skalica is not just about numbers for him. It is about the home story.
The champion returns
Pecháč has already won the Skalica festival twice: in 2021 with 7.5 points out of 9, and in 2023 he repeated the triumph with the same score — finishing ahead of Ukrainian grandmaster Anton Korobov, who is in the Masters field this time as well. Few know the hall of the House of Culture as well as he does. And the chess world remembers the Chennai Olympiad 2022, where he drew with Magnus Carlsen — the reigning World Champion and world No. 1 at the time.
The home player against the world
In the elite ten of the Chess Slovak Masters 2026, Pecháč faces grandmasters Alexander Donchenko (Germany), Leon Luke Mendonca (India), the youngest grandmaster in history Abhimanyu Mishra (USA), David Navara (Czechia), Ihor Samunenkov and Anton Korobov (Ukraine), Daniel Dardha (Belgium), Aditya Mittal (India) and Alexandr Fier (Brazil). With an average rating of 2603, it will be the strongest chess tournament ever held on Slovak soil — and Pecháč will be there as the only Slovak.

Chess Slovak Open® 2026 — information and registration
The international chess festival Chess Slovak Open® 2026 takes place 22–30 August 2026 at the House of Culture in Skalica. The festival’s total prize fund is €15,000. Alongside the closed Chess Slovak Masters, the programme includes the open Open A and Open B tournaments, the women’s Queen Masters and accompanying events.
The tournament commentator will be GM Sergej Movsesian, festival ambassador.
